I headed off to San Diego for a quick trip to meet up with the rest of the BMWPerformance Team as part of the global launch of the new 3 Series Sedan. It was a fun (and busy) trip and I am honored to be part of such a phenomenal group of athletes on the BMW Team: Janet Evans, Natalie Coughlin, Ricky Berens, Bryan Clay, April Holmes, Jonathan Horton, Clay Johnson, Sanya Richards-Ross, Mallory Weggemann, Evelyn Stevens.
It was a pretty cool event, athletes were scattered at modules throughout the OTC campus and the dealers rotated in groups through the different stations where we all gave presentations on how our sport relates to the design of the new 3 Series. We used slick words like torque, efficiency, speed, carbon, aerodynamic, etc. I worked with para-Olympic Gold medalist and world record holder April Holmes, another Track and Field athlete,
Connie, and one of the USA Running Coaches, Jeremy. We each had a small role and covered how aerodynamics, fueling, and efficiency ties in with being an athlete. It was fun to hear how much of the same technology goes into the design and engineering of the car that I use in my training, racing and equipment selection.
After a full day of presenting, I went off for an interview, some photo-shoots, and then headed back to the Andaz Hotel for some socializing and cocktails. Later that night, BMW hosted a big banquet at the San Diego Convention Center for the dealers in town. It was really fun to mix and mingle with more of the athletes and have dinner with some of the dealers. We took a big group shot of the BMW Performance Team, sprawled around a BMW, of course (more pictures soon!). The highlight of the night was watching One Republic play, they put on a great show. They sound similar to Coldplay, but are much better live!
